Who else read Spender: The Novel by Jimmy Nail?

I am a fan of the Spender TV show and recently acquired Spender: The Novel by Jimmy Nail and am reading it now. Who else has read the book? So far I dig it. There are nit-picky writing details I notice, but am enjoying the book. It is nice to re-experience the characters. Too bad Nail stopped after ...

Re: Which Auf-Pet actor would you pick to play Doctor Who?

So he was a companion. The Auf Pet guys could have been companions too, looking for pubs throughout the galaxies in time and space. "Dearest Brenda...hiding from the Daleks in a telephone box with the lads...it's not so bad as it sounds...plenty of room to get away from Oz's armpits and lack of deod...

Re: Which Auf-Pet actor would you pick to play Doctor Who?

Noel Clarke was Doctor Who? I have not watched much of the new one because I cannot get into it. I don't think it is as good. Watching the William Hartnell ones for the first time and think it quite good. Tom Baker will always be a favourite. Doctor Who is a woman now, I see from all the posters. It...

Which Auf-Pet actor would you pick to play Doctor Who?

It occurred to me, the Auf-Pet actors are quirky, fun and interesting enough to play Doctor Who and would probably be good at it. More the old style Doctor Who (my favorite) than the new. Which of the Auf-Pet fellows would you pick to be 'The Doctor'?

Re: Social Media Vs The Forum

The sacred hides in the ordinary. Here's a Zen story: Hyakujo, the Chinese Zen master, used to labor with his pupils even at the age of eighty, trimming the gardens, cleaning the grounds, and pruning the trees. The pupils felt sorry to see the old teacher working so hard, but they knew he would not ...

Re: Social Media Vs The Forum

Hey, work is sacred. This is a story about working lads and the dignity of labour. Hallowed grounds indeed.

Re: Social Media Vs The Forum

Facebook et al have proven that the user is the product, for advertisers, time and time again. Here's a scholar on the toxicity of social media: https://youtu.be/dmXcjvL9VSc . It is important to have forums like this as a grass roots space to enthuse over things we love. If you read the terms and co...

Re: HOW did you all arrive at this site?

I'm a Jimmy Nail fan from Spender/Crocodile Shoes era (you could not count how many times "cowboy dreams" played on TV in Toronto during the mid-90's) who saw this fan site: http://www.jimmynail.co.uk . I then looked Nail up on IMDB and saw he did a series called ' Auf Wiedersehen, Pet' which did no...

Re: favourite character

All of the character serve as important archetypes in the series. However, if I was working with the lads, I would gravitate towards Dennis first and then Wayne. Dennis is the most conscious/aware and social-justice minded of the lot while I would connect with Wayne over music and tape swapping. Plu...

Re: Ya nar Oz

I have recently read Northern Soul and was into the first half well enough when Jimmy Nail wrote about his youth and Auf Pet and what it was like to work with his fellow actors. The part where he auditioned for Auf Pet was the most gripping and I was glued to the pages. I loved the part where Nail th...
