Unanswered Questions....

Post by Pete M » Wed May 29, 2013 10:48 pm

Evening all. Many apologies for my post, they do tend to go on a bit...but I have a few questions.
Using the money calculator site that was posted a few days ago (fantastic), the six grand that Dennis owed Fraser plus the interest would be nearer twenty grand in todays money, so, for one , you can see why Dennis was drowning his sorrows and prepared to bodge the job at the manor, but why would Fraser wipe that debt out whilst presumably still paying Dennis a wage too?
Next, did the VW camper van belong to Dennis, or provided by Fraser?
Where did the lads sleep whilst doing up the room that they were dossing down in?
In series 1 in 'Suspicion', Wayne berates the rest of the lads for not having a sound fiscal strategy, where as in series 2, 'No sex we're Brickies', he admits to Nev that he can and does live way beyond his income..?
In series 4 Oz says that he never dances, not even at his wedding, but in series 2 he's having a right good go on the dance floor at cannibals?
Whatever happened to Moxey's stutter?
In series 1 there is no reference to Bomber being a wrestler, but in series 2 there are several mentions in episode 1, as well as in the opening titles??
Series 2 ended strangely, especially as there were plans to do another series soon after, if poor Gary Holton hadn't passed away. What was the plan there?
If Fraser had his assets frozen, presumably all the work the lads did on the Manor was a waste of time, as it would never have opened as a rest home?
In series 3, Oz and Bomber were like a shadow of there previous incarnations, but by Cuba, Oz was crude and belligerent again, and Bomber was 'hammering the rum' and smoking cigars?
I know I ramble, and it sounds like I am being negative, but nothing could be further from the truth. These blokes have been like my mates for thirty years, which is probably why I over analyse it all!!
Lastly, why is Bomber called Bomber, even by his wife, and is Oz really leonard or big Willy? Cheers folks ..x

Well, the only ones I have a problem with are Series 3. Hate Leonard and hate Bomber looking so ill. Worst of all, Moxey's lost stutter. Would have been much better to hear; "S s s sod you S S S Startup, ya s s s scurvy t t t tosser !" And, " I s s s sold me ch ch ch chello !" But as all the talk has been the need to cram for the sake of limited episodes, I guess there wasnt enough time to have the old Mox !!! [ Bollocks ]

in series one, i've always wondered why the lads just didnt go and buy a new dartboard after magowan nicked moxey's. you can see that the lads drew a dartboard on the wall of the hut with chalk but surely a quid each from them all would have got a new board.
Adult..and liable to cause offence.

Yeah, but the numbers would have been in German...

I think that sometimes you have to fill in the gaps yourself when it come to TV. Writers need to write episodes which are good and pull in viewers. They don't always bother too much with questions that we, as fans, may have.

I think each fan just need to find answers they're happy with and go with them. We'll never know for sure really.

But these are my answers, anyway...

Things had been going well for Ally around this time. A hot bird in Vicki, big house at Darras Hall, a Jag, villa in Spain, a new project in Thornley Manor, plus a group of reliable cowboys to do it up with a gopher gaffer who's not gonna ask too many questions.

Dennis had worked with Ally for a while so maybe with Ally doing so well, his generosity of spirit appeared and if Dennis came good with the building work that'd be his debt paid off.

Not a great answer of course, but Ally was quite a loveable rogue up until the last couple of episodes, so I think it works.
Next, did the VW camper van belong to Dennis, or provided by Fraser?
I'd say Dennis owned it. Bit of a heap but he needed a runaround. It was a good contrast too to the Jag he drove that wasn't his.
Where did the lads sleep whilst doing up the room that they were dossing down in?
Good question. A bit like painting themselves into a corner. They probs did the room up while they still slept there but they left the carpet 'til last. So on the last morning they got up, took their gear outside, laid the carpet and hey presto, job done. Unless it was a varnished floor so the varnishing was left 'til last.
In series 1 in 'Suspicion', Wayne berates the rest of the lads for not having a sound fiscal strategy, where as in series 2, 'No sex we're Brickies', he admits to Nev that he can and does live way beyond his income..?
But don't forget, Wayne's fiscal strategy was based on having no money to spend, except on a bottle of plonk. He was probably as skint as the others but was better as winging it to get that extra good time he craved.
In series 4 Oz says that he never dances, not even at his wedding, but in series 2 he's having a right good go on the dance floor at cannibals?
Maybe he doesn't do 'proper' dancing? I myself have mashed it up on the dance floor in nightclubs. But to grab hold of a girl and do the rumba or waltz or dirty dancing? Not me, two left feet. Even if I got married I wouldn't want to dance with the lucky lady
Whatever happened to Moxey's stutter?
Stutters are curable ;)
In series 1 there is no reference to Bomber being a wrestler, but in series 2 there are several mentions in episode 1, as well as in the opening titles??
I always thought that Bomber became a wrestler inbetween series 1 and 2?

But if not, maybe he told them off screen in series 1 he was a wrestler? We didn't know Den was scared of heights until series 3 ;)
Series 2 ended strangely, especially as there were plans to do another series soon after, if poor Gary Holton hadn't passed away. What was the plan there?
I don't ever think there was a plan as series 3 was never commissioned. Again, one for the imagination :)
If Fraser had his assets frozen, presumably all the work the lads did on the Manor was a waste of time, as it would never have opened as a rest home?
But his assets weren't frozen at the time of the demolti.... er restoration. So yeah, it was a waste of time, which is even more poetic.
In series 3, Oz and Bomber were like a shadow of there previous incarnations, but by Cuba, Oz was crude and belligerent again, and Bomber was 'hammering the rum' and smoking cigars?
In series 3, Oz had turned a new leaf and Bomber was ill.

During the third series, Oz became more and more like his old self. He started off virtually tee-total with a grand plan to get ahead of the game. He impressed the lads and all's well. Then they end up in a hut and Oz is eyeing up a boot full of beer and fighting rednecks. Like Den said "The longer we live in a hut, the more the old Oz rules..."

And after Laney and the medicine man fixed Bomber, he was okay to enjoy himself again.

Anyway, remember what Bomber said to Mox: "People change, Mox. Even Oz!" People do change over time. Just nature.
I know I ramble, and it sounds like I am being negative, but nothing could be further from the truth. These blokes have been like my mates for thirty years, which is probably why I over analyse it all!!
I know the feeling :)
Lastly, why is Bomber called Bomber, even by his wife, and is Oz really leonard or big Willy? Cheers folks ..x
Just one of those things. Marjorie calls Oz "Oz!" too. a mate of wor lasses calls her bloke "Greeny". A play on his last name. Come to think of it I don't even know his first name!

But Oz is really Leonard with a Big Willy ;)

Don't forget Ally had casinos!
I guess in todays terms, Ally would be loaded, multi millionaire. Its weird how back then he was loaded but with less gadgets etc that we have today, he never really looked it, he had the power though.

I always thought Ally was lining Dennis up for a permanent role in his organisation, til it started to go tits up. Maybe he was letting Den off the cash to tie up any loose ends first?

And I could be wrong here, but something tells me that in the novelisation of series 2 it's mentioned the VW was supplied by Ally. As I say, I could be wrong, but I read the novel around the time of the first broadcast and it has never occurred to me the van might be Den's, I always believed it was Ally's.

Right! I'm reading that book now.
I've had it for ages, going to find out what's different, and bit by bit I will add it to the Forum.
Over and out.

Wow, my memory is better than I ever gave it credit for! I've just grabbed the novel off the shelf and there it is in black and white...

"Dennis and Oz were rattling back towards Wolverhampton in a half-wrecked VW bus that Ally Fraser had dug up from somewhere."

I was just about to post that line, almost word for word. Which considering I haven't read the book for nigh on 25 years is pretty amazing.

Or sad.

This show was all about Geordie lads abroad in the 70's and early 80's. Nowts else.
This is my view, has been and always will be.
All the rest is a result of the success they met in the first series.
