Is Dennis a true Geordie?

Post by BarryTaylor » Fri Aug 09, 2013 8:43 pm

In 'Who Won the War Anyway' Dennis says 'not in Birtley its not' in response to Oz's statments about divorce around the world.

Birtley is many miles south of Newcastle and is even south of Gateshead, pre 1974 it was in County Durham.

Now Dennis could have simply moved there when he married Vera, we don't know, but lets say for argument sake he was born and bred there. This would make him more of a Mackem than a Geordie?

BIrtley comes under the Durham post code area even though it is only 2 miles from Gateshead which comes under the Newcastle post code area. At most I would say Birtley is * miles from Newcastle so to say it is miles south from it is out of proportion. Also Birtley has a massive Newcastle fan base so I'd expect that they wouldn't want to be called anything other than 'geordies'

He could be kicking his heels in South Africa but it doesn't mean anything. The writers says he Geordie and that is it.

Where's 'Hetton-le-Hole'? Always thought that was a great name for a place. Also used to work with a lad who came from 'Crook', another great place name. he didn't like being referred to as a Geordie, either...
