When Dennis Met Oz

Post by Hallwood » Thu Jun 11, 2015 2:19 pm

“Another pint, Oz?” asked Sandra, the barmaid at the Wheatsheaf. Oz took a last swig of the dregs of his fifth pint of the afternoon, then replied “aye, please.” He noticed his old friend Dennis Patterson come in through the lounge door, so he said “and one for Dennis as well, please, pet.”

“How Dennis, man! How’s things?” Oz asked his friend.
“Not too good, I’m afraid, pal”. Dennis looked dejected, like a man who had lost a fiver and found a penny.
“Why, what’s up?”
“I was supposed to be gannin’ over to Germany for work, but the lad who was meant to be driving us there has pulled out. He’s found a job up Jesmond way, so we’ve got nee transport, like. What a pisser.”
“Aye, what a pisser. It’s bloody desperate trying to get work round here.”
“I thought you were supposed to be working at that site in Wallsend?”
Oz took a gulp of his freshly-pulled pint of Exhibition, wiped his mouth with his sleeve and began to tell Dennis his version of what happened.
“Well, I was. But there was this Cockney gadgey, a bit of a heid-the-ba, like. We were having, let’s say a heated discussion, aboot football, y’kna? He’s a West Ham fan, and he reckoned that West Ham are better than Newcastle? So, I set him straight, but the argument got a bit oot of hand, like. Anyway, the gaffer saw me sticking one on this lad’s nose, only in self-defence, mind, and gave me the boot. Reckoned I started it. Which I didn’t.”

Dennis shook his head. He’d known Oz for years, and had seen enough to know that Oz was well capable of starting an argument in an empty room.
“When was this?”
“Aboot three hours ago. I’ve been in here ever since. They gave us me wages for the week, like. I divvn’t want to face Marjorie withoot a bit of Dutch courage, if ye knaa what I mean.”
Dennis knew well what he meant. He had only met Marjorie a couple of times, but had seen enough to know that facing her after getting the sack would be no picnic, even for a hard nut like Oz.
“It’s a bit of a pisser as well. I’d just bought a new car last Tuesday. £200, and I was going to give the bloke £25 a week for it.”
Dennis’ face brightened.
“You’ve got a motor? What kind?”
“Ford Zephyr. It’s not much to look at, a bit of rust here and there, but it gans canny.”
Dennis ordered another two pints for them at the bar, and told Oz to come and sit down.
“Listen, Oz, I’ve got a proposition for you that might take some of the heat from Marjorie off you.”
“Oh aye?”
“Well, you know I said I had this gig in Germany, but no transport? Well, mebbes we could both go to Germany to work, seeing as you’ve got the motor? There’s this other young lad that was gan to come with us. What do you reckon?”
“What’s he like?” asked Oz.
“His name’s Neville. He’s a young lad, married to a young lass, Brenda. He lives in…”
“I divvn’t want his life story, man. Is he a Toon man?” Oz interrupted.
“Why aye, I’ve been to a few games with him”.
“Well, he’ll do for me. Aye, let’s gan to Germany. I could dee with a break from Marjorie. When were you thinkin’ of gan?”
“Tomorrow”.
Oz nearly choked on his pint.
“Tomorrow? Bloody hell, Den, that’s a bit short notice! Mind you, I’ve got nothing else to dee, now that bastard has gave us the sack. Right, ye can tell this Neville it’s back on. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Oh, man, thanks very much. I owe you one. Right, so now you can tell Marjorie that you’ve got another job lined up. Problem solved.”
“Aye, I’ll, er, let her know when I get home. We’ve got time for one more pint, though, eh?”

I likes it!
I think only die hard fans can vision scenes like this, and hear Oz and Dennis talking to each other. Nice work.

Thanks guys. I was a bit nervous at reading these replies, but I'm glad you likes it. I've had an idea for a second part, which I might do this weekend.
