Going back to work was the making of Brenda. She matured and lost a lot of her insecurities. Nev's merely multiplied. The scene when he's making dinner in ROTSP1 is a good example. She has to support him about how good his cooking is (supposed to be).
In Series 3 and 4 this is expanded upon. She's quit nursing and instead runs a business, in which she employs Neville.
