Jimmy Nail - 'The King Crabs'

Post by Leonard Osborne » Tue Jan 01, 2013 5:07 pm

During the late 70's and early 80's my dad used to own a pub in the Gateshead area which was quite popular for it's live music.

My dad told me a tale of when Jimmy Nail was performing at the pub one Sunday afternoon as the lead-singer with his band 'The King Crabs'. The pub used to have a giant wagon-wheel hanging from the ceiling. He told me that Jimmy sang quite a few of his songs whilst hanging upside down like a bat from the wagon-wheel. My dad also reckoned that for some reason Jimmy also performed his full set with only one shoe on.

My dad said that he had to ask Jimmy to calm his swearing down at the interval but he only lasted two minutes into the second set before he was effing and blinding again.

I always remember Neville saying in 'Last Rites' (as i got a Hedley image from it the other day) 'What a character!!' , sounds like Jimmy fits the same description!

Here are two photos of Jimmy performing with the King Crabs, I'll post the direct links since its someone else's work.

Jimmy Nail - Oz from Auf Wiedersehen Pet in later life - who was lead singer in The King Crabs a Newcastle based band in the late 1970's.

Photographed at The Bird's Nest pub WAIP night in Mainsforth Terrace Hartlepool. These are the only two images that survive (though one day I may find the original negatives...)

Aye they are quality photos. Jimmy is a good actor but just from the photos you can see he was so natural for the part of Oz

Something about the bloke just says.. 'Rude, Offensive, and liable to cause Offence' .. just like his description of his 'Business venture' in Last Rites.. ;)
